ACIAR Vietnam Newsletter - January 2026

We are pleased to share the latest ACIAR in Vietnam Newsletter (January 2026), which features important research findings and policy insights from ongoing Australia-Vietnam agricultural collaborations.

HAPRI's Research Highlighted

The newsletter features our recent work on "Critical Loss Points in Pangasius Value Chain" (pages 23-24), a collaborative research project examining food loss and waste throughout the Pangasius (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) value chain across the Mekong region.

Our systematic review of 19 studies provides the first comprehensive assessment of food loss from production to consumption stages, identifying three critical intervention points:

  • Production stage: 30-50% physical losses during grow-out

  • Processing stage: 65% loss (2.8kg raw material → 1kg fillet)

  • Distribution: cold chain instability and spoilage concerns

The research also reveals significant opportunities in by-product utilisation, with potential to generate 69,000-81,000 tons of Pangasius bones annually for high-value products.

This evidence-based research contributes to building more efficient, sustainable value chains that enhance food security while reducing environmental impacts across Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
