Heritage and tourism (the Imperial City, a UNESCO site) anchor its economy, alongside services, FDI manufacturing, education and healthcare. It became a centrally-governed city in January 2025 (its name shortened from Thừa Thiên Huế) and was otherwise unchanged by the July 2025 merger.
