A remote, mountainous province in the Northwest highlands on the Chinese border; population about 500,000 (2024), one of Vietnam's least populous. Its rugged terrain supports large hydropower dams (Lai Châu, Bản Chát, Huội Quảng), tea and cardamom, and cross-border trade. It was unaffected by the 2025 provincial merger.
