A mountainous province in the far Northwest bordering Laos and China, home to the historic Điện Biên Phủ battlefield; population about 660,000 (2024). The fertile Mường Thanh valley makes it the Northwest's largest rice producer, alongside subsistence farming, hydropower and battlefield tourism. It was unchanged in the 2025 merger.
